Beauty Dish Basic Test shoot - Model & Lighting set up

Here are the results from a recent test shoot I did with Sana, an aspiring model and actress based in New York. I met Sana at a recent open casting call we held in Brooklyn, NY for several of our new projects (serials and films). I called her in later to do a test shoot with her.

Placing her in front of a white seamless backdrop, I kept the lighting setup simple. A beauty dish to one side at 45 degree angle and a silver reflector on the floor at her feet to fill the shadows under the eyes and to brighten up the face.

Beauty dish is my favorite kind of lighting to use for fashion photography. It moulds the light and defines the model's features beautifully. When using beauty dish, the closer the main source of light is to the subject, the better the result will be. I kept the light about 2 feet from Sana, beauty dish a few inches above her head slightly pointing down. On the floor was a big silver reflector which bounced the light back into her eyes and face.

Here are the results:

Gear used:
Canon 5D Mark2
Canon 70-200mm

A Fashion Shoot Experiment

I recently had a chance to attend a fashion photography seminar at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in NYC. It was a chance for me to learn about entering the fashion biz as a photographer. I have gained tons of valuable information through this 3 days seminar. Here are a few images from the final shoot:
